English version

The art of measurement — made in Germany. Striving to perfect it is the mission of the 2,100 employees of PTB, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt. As Germany’s national metrology institute and a leading center of research, we operate in an international environment to develop world-class measurement standards. We at PTB work to ensure that people and organizations can trust the measurements they use.

At our Berlin site, we are looking to fill the following position in Department 8.2 "Biosignals":

Doctoral candidate
Physics
Remuneration Group 13 TVöD Bund ○ Three-year fixed term ○ Part-time 33.15 hours/week

Your tasks:

Within Department 8.2 Biosignals, the working group „SQUID-based magnetometry“ carries out research and development focussing on measurement techniques for biomagnetic signals and ultra-low-field NMR. We use highly sensitive measurement technology based on superconducting quantum interferometers (SQUIDs) in magnetically shielded environments.

The DFG-funded national research project ‘Q-Hyper’ is dedicated to the further development of the para-hydrogen-based hyperpolarisation method SABRE. The aim of the PhD is to develop a quantitative understanding of the polarisation build-up and to confirm this through validation measurements. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with the MOIN CC in Kiel, with a corresponding opportunity to pursue a PhD. At the PTB, the focus is on the fluid-dynamic optimisation of SABRE reactors, SQUID-based ultra-low-field NMR using advanced SOT methods, and the direct detection of the hyperpolarisation process. You will support us with the following activities:

Your activities will include:

  • Carrying out and validating fluid-dynamic simulations of SABRE reactors
  • Designing and constructing SQUID-based ultra-low-field NMR systems based on advanced SOT methods
  • Developing a measurement setup for the direct detection of the hyperpolarisation process in advanced SOT methods
  • Presenting the results at national and international conferences and publishing them in scientific journals

Your profile:

  • University degree (Diploma/Master’s) in Physics, Biomedical Engineering or a comparable engineering discipline
  • Excellent knowledge, practical experience and skills in high-precision measurement technology, magnetic resonance or magnetic sensors
  • Knowledge of SQUID measurement technology and/or ultra-low-field magnetic resonance would be an advantage
  • Experience in programming, modelling, flow simulations and data analysis would be an advantage
  • Ability to carry out goal-oriented scientific work
  • You are a strong team player with excellent communication skills
  • Proficiency in German (A1 level) and English (C1 level)
  • You are willing to travel for work both in Germany and abroad

 We offer:

  • Access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure and high-precision measurement technology
  • A complete focus on your PhD – with no compulsory teaching duties
  • Personalised PhD supervision and support from the PTB’s PhD programme
  • Participation in specialist conferences and the opportunity to build scientific networks at both national and international levels

You can find an overview of our benefits on our careers page.
